For my part, if it's the last ammo you have left, it's better than none, but I would never intentionally choose it for that purpose. The potential drawbacks far outweigh any possible benefit.

It would be interesting to hear from some war veterans about their observations when it comes to the effectiveness of using "Willy Pete" to stop attacking enemy troops, whether through physical or psychological trauma. Being set ablaze by white phosphorus sounds like it would take the starch out a bad guy pretty quickly. Dr. B.

I guess my first comment was deleted. Watch inrangetv video on German 8mm B Patrone and Russian 7.62x54R PZ ammunition. At first they were using, I believe, 4 inch thick ballistics gel and it didn't do much, but when they used 8 inch thick ballistic gel, I think, it was putting softball too basketball sized holes in the gel. There was some charring in the hole, but I think that would be the least of your worries. The huge hole in your chest would be the main cause of death. During the 90's and early 2000's. This stuff was being imported and I bought alot of the B Patrone. They have a cross section of the B Patrone and it has a firing pin and a small amount of explosives in it. Devastating stuff.

Military level complexity/plausible use in my opinion - it's hard enough to get ordinary hollow points to perform predictably(which is why I think simple wadcutters are the best, more assured defense round) so getting something to explode/burn in the right place at the right time and limited to the target in damage seems far too "iffy" to make for reliable ordinary civilian use. Just imagine the cost and public reaction(media, prosecutors, anti gun activists, etc.) if the complexity is not enough to dissuade.

From my limited experience in medical technology seeing cauterization tools in use, I wouldn't think a bullet would be able to contain enough energy to cauterize anything major that would effect the results of shooting an attacker. An explosive round would be a quick flash of fire that might char tissue in small quantities, but that would be randomly distributed and probably not effective for stopping blood loss. A tracer round's phosphor chemical might have the capability on smaller vessels if it were to have the burn time inside the target (a shot at very close range), but it would need to be close enough and focused right at the vessel. This might work for liver damage though, if the round stopped in just the right spot. Livers tend to be notorious for finding ways to bleed after damage through too, so good luck. Lungs might be the same as livers, but i don't have any experience with that organ.

Explosive rifle ammunition was used in limited quantity against troops in WW2. It had variable effects and was not considered a good option. It was mainly a psycological weapon because of the perceived agony it could cause. InRangeTV did some testing a while back with some old surplus ammo they got ahold of somehow. The bullets mostly passed through their analog target before detonating, so the effect was very limited. The triggering mechanism and burn rate of the explosive was not quick enough to to funtion on a man sized target. I guess maybe with modern technology we could make something better, but...

Incendiary rounds are for seeing where your fire is going, and possibly igniting a fuel source such as a gas tank. Hitting flesh would just cauterise any wound caused, most likely reducing damage. I'd stick to JHP's for self defense.

I carry pepper spray and a Taurus judge with dragons breath. If they don't stop after the pepper spray, the dragons breath will light them up. Pepper spray is flammable 😂

Add to the potential negative side is the very real possibility of missing the perp and the incendiary round hitting something downrange that becomes burning collateral damage.

If the incendiary round would cauterize the wound it could be argued 'in court' that the round was effective at stopping the threat without killing the attacker. But it's ridiculous to worry about arguing over which bullet shot the attacker. JHP are made to destroy without over penetrating. They are made to kill with greater damage. No one argues why a person used a JHP over a FMJ that I've ever heard whined about on the internet.

The heritage product line revolvers is basically made by Taurus manufacturing I personally distrust taurus to make revolvers The Springfield armory revolvers that I don’t remember what they are I think are made in the Philippines And yes, they’re made to a price point same with the EAA product lines I almost trust charter arms before I trust these two products just because it’s made in the US I think but maybe they’re making the parts elsewhere I hear now that Smith and Wesson uses metal injection molding on their parts and their Revolvers

Types of incendiary rounds, magnesium, burns hot enough to melt steel usually in 40mm or larger and grenades fire can not be put out, White Phosphorus, is blown out to spread fires, ignites on contact with air remove air and it stops burning, sodium ignites on contact with any liquid containing water like the human body remove water and stops burning. deliberately using any of them on people is actually a war crime. if no air like inside a person it doesn't burn but it will start burning when doctor opens wound to remove fragments, it will poison person if left inside...

Tracers which light up if fired in dark when might not be able to see sights but can make out silhouette of opposing force or perpetrators so you can correct line of fire to be on target. However could start home on fire if fired indoors so, I'd say no not a good idea weighing benefits v consequences. If used outdoors person is probably already fleeing so is it really self defense at that point? I think probably not. If in combat situation ie if USA invaded by foreign entity or we're being oppressed under a defined tyrannical dictatorship maybe could be justified in that fight scenario.

I posed this question because I just got a few boxes of .22lr tracer rounds just for fun but got to thinking that many drawbacks of .22lr for self defense (penetration depth, small hole) could be mitigated by the round being on fire while it was buried inside an assailant. Still seems better than standard .22lr out of a revolver.

After giving some mugger or home invader a case of fatal heartburn with incendiary bullets, an anti gun judge is far more likely to nix a self defense argument. A standard hollow point is not considered exotic so would be effective without possible extra legal hassles.

I agree that I would not want to have explain to a judge or jury or whatever why I chose to use incendiary rounds. Plus, the way I understand it, scientifically the way to neutralize a living adversary is through as quickly as possible lowering the blood pressure through rapid loss of blood. I would not want to risk that an incendiary round might cauterize any blood vessels or wounds. That's my two cents.

I bought a used 200DS. Sadly, it had cylinder issues. The revolver won't fire on three chambers. That said, the recoil was surprisingly mild on the three rounds that actually fired. Anyway, the gun is being worked on by Chiappa.
